Zeitgeist – World cup Sweden 1958

The 1958 FIFA World Cup brought the tournament to Sweden, where a new generation of football began to capture the imagination of the world. It was a tournament of youthful energy and optimism, culminating in Brazil’s first World Cup triumph.

For Sweden 1958, DOT recreates the visual atmosphere of a country entering a confident new post-war era. Clean forms, strong colour and a sense of Scandinavian optimism provide the backdrop to a tournament that introduced one of football’s greatest icons to the world. Just 17 years old, Pelé announced himself on the international stage, scoring six goals in the knockout rounds — including two in the final against Sweden.

The final at Råsunda became a defining image of the tournament. Brazil defeated the hosts 5–2, with Pelé scoring a remarkable goal after flicking the ball over a Swedish defender before finishing from the air. The young Brazilian was embraced by the Swedish players and, in the aftermath, even by King Gustaf VI Adolf.
